Artman Gallery will be bringing some innovative new works to our walls and floors for the New Arrivals showcase, running from 7 - 31st March. The group showcase features new work by sculptor Troy Christmass, ceramicist Lilach Mileikowski and digital photographer Veronica Waite.
New Arrivals ties together the creation of new works by three feature artists.
Melbourne sculptor Troy Christmass reassembles domestic and urban ephemera to reveal their surprising new design potential. Israeli artist Lilach Mileikoswki has created natural clay works in several series, incorporating hand-building and wheel forming. Emerging Melbourne artist Veronica Waite has signified a shift from landscape painting with her contribution of digitally manipulated photography, mounted on aluminium.
The display broadens the viewers’ understanding about what is possible in each medium. Each piece has a sense of time and place, and reflects on the individual’s relationship to the natural. Connections may be found between human experience and laden metaphorical resonances of the environment. Troy Christmass rejuvinates discarded materials to create a new meaning, innovating a new way of looking at refuse. His wood sculptures organically reinvent the materials from which they are made – offcuts, leftovers, and residual timber that can be put to use again to reveal their hidden potential. Lilach Mileikowski sculpts earthy matter into fragile forms that suggest the past may be ever present.
Her timeless ceramic works are given solidarity by their heritage, and seek to identify the ancient within the contemporary. Veronica Waite’s gaze falls on the landscape, and the overwhelming effects of environmental pollution.
Her images are digitally manipulated to achieve intense colour saturation - a reflection on the effects of climate change and leave a foreboding impression of environmental change.
VCA graduates Troy Christmass and Veronica Waite exemplify exciting new directions for mixed media and represent a place for New Arrivals in contemporary art. Lilach Mileikowski has work in collections in Australia, the US, England and Israel. Her awards include the Pat Emery Award for technical skill, aesthetic appeal and originality.
New Arrivals runs from Wednesday 7 March to Saturday 31 March 2012.
